Restroom Cleaning Tips
Toilet and Urinal Cleaning

Restroom Cleaning Tips
Equipment and Supplies Needed.
Janitors Cart or Caddy, Dust Mop, Wet Mop, Bucket and Wringer, Vacuum
Cleaner (for carpeted washrooms), Dust Wand, and caution signs. Germicidal detergent, non-acid bowl cleaner or acid bowl cleaner, all purpose cleaner, glass cleaner, 2 damp cloths, bowl brush or swab, several dry cloths or disposable wipers, rubber gloves, plastic trash liners, hand soap, toilet paper, paper towels, seat covers, and a damp sponge, putty knife and gum remover.

1 Prepare Area: Knock on the outside door. Open slightly and announce
your intention to enter. If the restroom is occupied, wait until it is empty. Then open and "stop" the door and post a "Closed for cleaning sign.
2 Toilet Bowls and Urinals: Apply toilet bowl disinfectant cleaner to
toilets and urinals. Follow the instructions printed on container.
Let the cleaner stand while the balance of the restroom is being cleaned.
3 Replenish Supplies: Refill all hand soap, hand towel, toilet tissue
and sanitary napkin dispensers. Check the deodorizers and refill them when it is necessary. Check the working condition of all the dispensers in the restroom.
4 High Dust: Remove all dust webs with a lambswool or microfiber duster.
Clean the wall vents, tops of doors and partitions with the cloth or paper wipers dampened with disinfectant solution.
5 Clean Light Fixtures and Mirrors: Wipe off the light fixtures and mirrors with glass cleaner and clean cloth or paper wipes. Move around the restroom until all are cleaned.
6 Clean Wash Basins: Using a crème cleanser, phosphoric acid cleaner or
germicidal solution (depending on soil levels) clean the interior surfaces of all wash basins. Exterior surfaces, faucets and piping under basins should also be cleaned daily. Wipe chrome dry with a soft cloth or wiper. Wash basin should be disinfected or sanitized during each cleaning operation. Do not use powerful acid toilet bowl and urinal cleaners in wash basins. Wash basins are made of baked enamel that will be removed by strong acids or scrubbing with harsh abrasives, plus using strong acid cleaners will discolor and pit chrome fixtures. Use strong acid cleaners only of vitreous china toilets and urinals. Check facets for dripping and ease of operation; also check the drain flow
to see that each drain is clean and empties the wash basin.
7 Spot Clean Walls and Partitions: Dampen a cloth with germicidal solution or spray germicidal cleaner directly to the surface. Wipe off shelves, dispensers, receptacles, doors and partitions.
8 Clean Inside of Toilets and Urinals: Clean toilet bowls and urinals thoroughly with toilet bowl brush or swab and disinfectant cleaner or proper acid cleaner. Check toilets and urinals with a flashlight mirror for stains and incrustations that are under the rim. Do not damage the smooth surface of vitreous china toilets and urinals by heavy scrubbing with abrasive materials. Flush, agitate with the brush or bowl swab. Flush again.
9 Clean Exterior of Toilets and Urinals: Moving down the line, clean from top to bottom with germicidal solution mixed at proper dilution. Disinfect all surfaces, pipes and valves.
10 Pick Up Waste From Floor: Use a dust pan and broom to pick up all paper and trash from the floor. Use a putty knife to remove any gum.
11 Empty Waste Receptacle: Empty and remove trash can liners then wipe the interiors with a germicidal solution. Replace with new liners.
12 Clear Floor Of All Obstructions: Remove all supplies and equipment.
Put waste receptacles out of the way.
13 Mop Floor: Apply properly measured germicidal solution and hot water around the toilets and urinals. Begin at the far end of the restrooms; wet mop floor or spray with a portable pressure sprayer. Allow wet disinfectant solution to work up to ten minutes (during the waiting period move equipment and supplies to other areas). Wring out the mop and pick up excess solution. Scrub with a deck or multi-level scrub brush if heavy, visible soils are present.
14 When Floor Has Dried: Replace all of the waste receptacles. Remove the "Closed for cleaning" sign. Wash hands and arms carefully, to avoid cross contamination. Rinse and wipe down sink.
15 Clean Up: Clean up all of the equipment at the conclusion of the shift.
All buckets and wringers must be thoroughly washed and hung to dry, away from walls. All other equipment is either washed, disinfected or wiped down and stored in proper location. Wash hands. Remember to prevent cross contamination do not use the bathroom mop any place else except for in the bathroom.

Equipment and Supplies Needed
Disinfectant/Cleaner Solution, Bowl Caddy, Bowl Mop/Bowl Brush. Flashlight Inspection Mirror, Clean Wipers, Protective Gloves and Safety Eyewear

1 Preparation: Assemble all necessary supplies. Flush toilet and urinal
before beginning the procedure.
2 Disinfecting/Sanitizing/Cleaning Toilets and Urinals: Apply disinfectant
or sanitizer cleaner to the inside of the bowls and urinals. Wet the flushing rim of the toilet thoroughly. Leave the chemical in the bowl while you disinfect or sanitize cleaning the other areas around the fixture. Spray the top of the toilet seat with disinfectant or sanitizer cleaner. Raise the seat and spray the underside. Spray seat hinges until they are saturated. Spray all of the hardware on the toilet or urinal including flush handles and pipes that may have come in contact with human touch.

Apply additional Disinfectant or Sanitizer Cleaner by saturating a bowl mop,
held directly over the toilet or urinal, and applying the solution to the inside

Spray The outside and bottom surfaces of the fixture with the Disinfectant or Sanitizer cleaner. Rub these areas with a clean cloth, wiper or paper towel.

Wipe both sides of the toilet seat dry with a clean disposable wiper or towel.
Flush to remove any remaining disinfectant or sanitizing solution which may
splash on the next person to use the toilet or urinal.
